Wyn y Gwanwyn (spring Lambs)

This work was commissioned by the Gwanwyn Festival,2009, and first performed on 15 May of that year in the Millennium Centre in Cardiff by an ensemble of senior beginners. To reflect the time of year, and the name of the festival [which means 'Spring'), I decided to choose a seasonal theme. Young lambs were an obvious choice, leading to the composition of a set of variations on the folk tune Pant Corlan yr Wyn ('The Lambs' Fold Vale').

The musical theme doesn't appear in full until the end, but elements of the melody are heard in the series of short variations that precede it.

0nce the key of Eb has been set at the start, no pedal or lever changes are required throughout the work.
